Last night A and I did some scandalous shopping and bought a mask or two... in addition to the ones we already had. I woke up at 6 in the morning and made good use of the almost empty fitness room before taking a quick shower and making it down to breakfast just after 7:30. C. Our hotel boasts a few short blocks to the French Quarter and I intended to take some advantage of this. A had arrived earlier and was waking up from a cat nap. She had been for a walk and already bought a beautiful pink carnival mask. For $15? Yes please! That statement should indicate at least two things: a) that I've been trying to document our meals with some photography and b) that we have not made it home for dinner before sunset except for 1/7th of Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08199693109537301642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-69480118136989093052011-04-16T17:46:00.001-07:002011-04-16T19:48:18.036-07:00Rosso e Marrone ReleaseFinally winding down from a long, but fun 24 hours. The release of Rosso e Marrone batch 3 was yet another great time at the Captain Lawrence Brewery. Jen and I actually arrived in Pleasantville, NY around 8 pm last night, so we could check out the town a bit. Turns out that Pleasantville has an excellent pastry bakery and some other fun attractions. After walking around for a bit we decided Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11000668905110209073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-68496193817472852512011-03-18T19:25:00.000-07:002011-03-18T19:25:44.506-07:00PoutineI had never eaten cheese curds. But, after inexplicably becoming surrounded by people from the Midwest where these succulent morsels of disguised fat are battered and deep-fried, I had to try them. We bought a plastic package of cheddar curds from the bagged cheese section of the COOP six months ago. I ate two or three, discarding the rest. Seriously, cheese curds? After the unreasonably late excursions, pre-sickness and touch of alcohol it is safe to say there were many reasons I should not be feeling in top shape the following morning. A had gotten to bed a handful of hours before me and was also a little groggy, but washed up nicely and went to meet Other A at a cafe across the street where I joined them. The destination: San Francisco. The excuse: SPIE Photonics West Conference. I had a talk to give there along with a few other people from our institution, so we carpooled to Manchester airport with suits in tow and checked in for what was sure to be a Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08199693109537301642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-36948960634411111712011-02-06T14:13:00.000-08:002011-02-07T19:15:51.028-08:00Hill Farmstead Winter FestivalWe've been having quite the winter here in the Upper Valley this year. Snow, snow, snow and more snow. Needless to say, I haven't been venturing out of the area too much, but Jen and I did get away last Saturday to the Hill Farmstead Winter Festival in Greensboro VT. The Hill Farmstead is a quaint little brewery in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, but the brews coming out of this place are Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11000668905110209073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-82402025611992697122011-01-02T14:43:00.000-08:002011-01-03T08:34:32.227-08:00Drie FonteinenTo kick start the new year here at Food and Fermentation I decided to pull up some recent reviews from one of my favorite breweries, Drie Fonteinen. Last month Jen and I were lucky enough to get our hands on some bottles of the recent Malvasia Rosso release from Ølbutikken (thanks to Rachel and Jeppe!); and on top of that, our local tasting buddy, Dave, brought over an '02 Red Label Oude Gueuze Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11000668905110209073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-61515101456698282692010-12-13T17:15:00.000-08:002010-12-15T18:45:37.781-08:00Enten - Eller"Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it."-Søren Kierkegaard (Either/Or)Not here at Food and Fermentation. "Rum and coke" is not a valid response.
Many weeks back Matt and I hosted a beer tasting at his posh bachelor pad for a few handfuls of friends and their family. There was I introduced to Goslings Old Rum in what could possibly be my new favorite style of sipping glass. The flavor of the rum: amazing. At around 7 am on Saturday, Jen, Dave and myself made our trek north to the Heady Topper release at The Alchemist in Waterbury, VT. We arrived around 8:45 am with some decent snow flurries and were relieved to see that the line outside of Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11000668905110209073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-74851215404087925942010-11-27T19:29:00.001-08:002010-11-27T21:21:00.347-08:00AIChE, Salt Lake City, and Recent BrewsSo it's definitely been a few days since the last update on this blog. November has been an extremely busy month, but at least a good one. Work is going well and some tasty brews have crossed our path. The month started out with me flying to Salt Lake City and presenting at the annual AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineering) conference. I thought the talk went pretty well and there Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11000668905110209073noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-73742732000213585762010-10-20T17:13:00.000-07:002010-10-21T18:55:13.384-07:00Lately6:30. The earliest I've been home all week and then some!
I have to confess: we've mostly been eating out lately and by "out" I mean at the hospital where I work. Of those more notable meals, Au Bon Pain now has their Harvest Pumpkin soup back in rotation. John prefers the Old Fashioned Tomato. We can't all have good taste.
Speaking of pumpkins, two weekends ago between lab and lab I got out Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08199693109537301642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4699148139759939353.post-9713832857954593772010-10-10T14:11:00.000-07:002010-10-10T14:39:17.337-07:00PerfectScratched out on notes form yesterday . . . Beautiful day! The sun is slowly setting and casting golden light upon the autumn colored trees. I'm currently finishing off a glass of Ephraim, which is one of the best beers I have ever had. Surely the best double IPA I have ever tasted. So smooth, 280 IBU and packed with citrus. This is amazing stuff and I still have half a growler left.
